Week 2 Student Teaching
Week 2
My overall experience this week would be a rating of 2.
One of my biggest accomplishments this weeks was teaching all four of our reading groups. I felt that
my time management is improving, I did go over the allotted time twice, but this was actually good because we are testing students this week. By going over time during the two lessons it allowed my
CE to test several more students.
My biggest lesson learned today was that you need to be consistent when disciplining students. Today was Friday and many of my students were excited and frustrated that they haven't been able to play outside. I believe, I may have been a bit sympathetic to their situation and let them carrying on bad behavior too long. Several students kept leaving their seats and disrupting others during our reading rotations. I gave verbal warnings several times when usually we will take points from Class Dojo. The students continued on with their poor behavior. I deducted points from all threes students. They returned to their seats only to act out once again. I attempted to redirect them and they continued to not listen. In the end of this minor power struggle It ended with the students having negative points on classroom Dojo and they had to sit out on our read aloud during class dismissal. My CE explained that you have to be consistent and remain in your teacher role throughout the day. I do a lot of fun learning activities with my students and at times they may confuse me as one of their peers. The remainder of the day I continued to be consistent when someone is out of line.
I observed this week my teacher work with students on phonics creating non sense words. The group practiced the six syllables.
My short term goal is to each day take on a new task in my assigned school. My long term goal is to assume control of my classroom by Jan. 28th.
Standard 1: Teachers Demonstrate Leadership
This week I met with teachers concerning our new school clubs. I will be leading our schools Science Club and planning activities, supplies needed, and when we will meet.
Standard 2: Teachers Establish a Respectful Environment for a Diverse Population of Students.
This week I met with my assigned schools EC teacher and discussed what strategies I could use to support both my EC students.
Standard 3: Teachers Know the Content They Teach.
When teaching graphing I relate the content to real world to enhance students knowledge. For example, integrating social studies into a graph. The population of the state of Alaska.
Standard 4: Teachers Facilitate Learning for Their Students.
This week I've used several different strategies to assist students in math such as concrete manipulatives, drawing pictures to help visualize, flashcards.

Hi Chris!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry your week was pretty difficult. It was a strange and crazy week, so I'm sure having more routines next week will be better. Trust me, my time management is TERRIBLE right now. I am learning so much, so quickly. Also, when I was reading you post, it really stuck out to me about discipline. I'm way too soft and inconsistent, and you're right, we can't be. Students need structure and if a teacher doesn't follow it, chaos will rise. I am working on my classroom management and learning a lot from my CE. It's crazy how much we all have learned and grown since our first class together!
I hope you have a relaxing weekend and that next week will be better!
Hi Chris,
ReplyDeletePlease do not feel as though you are alone with the discipline problem. I have not been enforcing the policy of do not speak unless you have raised your hand. I have a problem with when someone blurts out the answer and it is the right answer I am so happy they understood the problem that I fail to correct their bad behavior. Unfortnately, other students see the lack of enforcment as a way to act out. Also, I have a few students who have especially bad behavior problems. One student thought it was funny to go to the office for punishment. Imagine that. Next week, I am going to really enforce the raising hand rule for my lessons so the classroom is not so wild. Good Luck with yours next week. Hopefully your week will be much better.
Chris,
ReplyDeleteI think all of these crazy schedules everyone is having lately is really affecting our students. Kids need structure and sometimes it's really hard to keep things structured. Time management is something that is a struggle for me as well. It seems that I either rush through lessons or take way too much time and go over. I think that is something we can all improve on this semester. I hope these next few weeks begin to get better for you!!
